We noticed several small cornice fall avalanches in the central Bear River Range today. The slides likely occurred a day or two ago since there was a little new snow on top of the debris pile. The cornice falls triggered slab avalanches that broke about 3 feet deep and 30-40 feet wide. The triggered slides were found on very steep, north and east facing wind loaded slopes. We were unable to trigger any cracking, collapsing, or other wind slabs on steep test slopes that we jumped on.
We found good riding conditions at upper elevation slopes but noticed a fair amount of wind affected snow at the highest parts of the range. The wind began picking up around noon and was transporting a fair amount of snow. As we were leaving the area, the clouds moved in and the beautiful morning of blue skies was quickly replaced by grey skies.
