Surprisingly good snow in the Flathead today both sledding and skiing near McLatchie. On a north aspect at 2000m we found 50cm of powder over an older firmer layer that made for great turns. In our test profile we also found a preserved surface hoar layer down about 90cm which still reacted with sudden results in a compression test. We noticed some very large cornices at ridge top which made us nervous so we avoided skiing under them. It also looked like moderate winds at upper elevations were likely building new windslabs in the alpine and open treeline areas.
