Easy to find a layer of facets under the new snow on shaded aspects. On sunny aspects, there is a ~5 inche thick ice crust under the new snow with very soft and wet facets under the crust (photo below). As temperatures drop and moisture in that faceted layer freezes, it may gain strength.

No cracking or collapsing. Extended column test in several locaitons were all ECTN (see video). I did one PST and the slab fractured multiple times before my saw blade got to the end of the column.

Generlly I think you need some wind loading to get an avalanche but a group spotted a soft slab avalanche in Wolverine Bowl which usually doesn't get much wind, possilbly skier triggered. I didn't see any activity in the Hourglass w hich can see some wind.

The challenge is that snow conditions were highly variable prior to this snow. Even though facets near the old snow surface are widespread, there are ice crusts from sun, soft crusts from warm temps, old tracks, and many other features in the snow. I suspect this variability means that avalanche conditions will be highly variable - possibly stable in one spot, unstable in another.
