Quick report
We traveled into the Great Bear Wilderness today, in hopes of catching a glimpse of any recent avalanche activity.
- We saw 4 recent large avalanches (2 above Dickey Lake and 2 on the east-facing slope of Nyack Mtn) that likely failed on a buried weak layer. All of these were D2-2.5 and ranged from 6,800 -7,200 ft in elevation. We estimated these avalanches occurred late last week or early this week. (1/9-1/11)
- The south-facing slopes had been cooked by the sun and had countless Loose Wet avalanches on them. Most were relatively harmless, with a few big enough to push a person around pretty good. We did see plenty of evidence of Loose Wet on shaded, north aspects as well.
- The road, trail, and shaded slopes all had a firm, nearly supportable crust on them.
