Quick Observation

The powder in the Calzon cutblocks was unreal in the morning today, some of the best riding of the year. It warmed up on schedule by the afternoon and even shaded snow started to get wet and heavy. No wind all day, perfect bluebird conditions. Didn’t see any signs of wind slab releases anywhere on any aspect at any elevation despite being able to see a lot of terrain, but we did see several wet avalanches on SW sunny slopes. Snow below treeline was soft even where it was wind affected; no instability or failures even on steep slopes or small drifts and cornices. There were numerous wet loose and slab avalanches triggered by snow balls off trees, from small slides on the side of the trail to fairly large slabs. We didn’t see the Feb 1 Surface Hoar layer, but also weren’t looking for it either.
