A moderate level of instability due to persistent slab conditions on NW-NE slopes at and below tree line. Above was not observed. Near ground weak layer. If a column is isolated it easily slides

In an extended column test, the near ground weak layer failed and propagated on the 14th tap. ETCP 14 The tested slope was 16 degrees, facing NNW in a treed area. Total depth was 59cm. The layer which failed ranged from 40 cm down to 55 cm. The weakened layer consisted of clustered rounded grains held by large ice bonds. In a compression test near the original test site, the layer had a moderate failure on the first tap from the elbow. CTM In both tests the break was not planar. In many areas, when on snowshoes, this layer was supportive but with additional pressure, was easily broken. If undercut blocks are pressed, they easily broke free.
