General conditions report from a tour to the Great Gulf today . . 0930; ascended thru Tucks, solar warming in effect in Right Gully 1000; enough breeze and cold ambient air to keep the Eastern Snowfields firm at this point, widespread sastrugi with some softer snow near the rocks 1030; high alpine conditions crossing Ball Crag were predominantly rime ice on water ice and scoured surfaces 1045; any optimism for a descent of Mother in Law was squashed quickly, NW aspect is scoured to an icy bed surface and rimed over from the start zone down the top 300-400 ft of the gully, with a litterbox of rocks and sastrugi below that 1130; Airplane is holding snow consistent with other E aspects, a wind condensed upper snowpack with pockets of softer snow. Didn't thoroughly investigate the deeper snowpack, but the gully is well filled in both in breadth and length. There is not currently a cornice in the gully A cornice has developed in Turkey Shoot, ice is exposed in Pipeline, two small refilled crowns from the past cycle were seen in Turkey and Spacewalk. Descended Airplane with some light sloughing from a pocket of soft snow at the small convexity above the choke. Ascended Mother in Law to avoid any lingering pockets in Airplane.
