Quick report
Snowpack feels more like the first week of April or May than March, but skiing's fun. Popped up and over the Snow Lake Divide mid-morning for a gander at conditions. The sky overdelivered on Wizard Glass' request for drizzle, with light/moderate rainfall mixed with frozen particles, but precipitation ended per his command on-schedule in late morning. Sunbreaks and blue sky followed until around 3pm, when dark clouds gathered to the west, pushing over the Pass above the peaks before 4pm. The rain softened any crusts, making for easy grip with skins, even as a new (to us) Source Lake skintrack ascended a snowy ledge on slab. This skintrack stayed E/N of the river until reaching the lake, rather than following the S/W margin of the river as usual. It appeared today that there's a bridge crossing the river downstream of the lake, for those headed to Big Trees, etc. That's a strange track for epochs of glide-avalanches. Plenty of creeping glide-cracks visible throughout the valley as we ascended. Lots of folks out and about on everything anyone ever skis. Dropping down to Snow Lake, the soft snow was present as advertised, but had gotten heavy and slow with either warmth or precipitation. Small panels could be easily ski-cut above the crust, but didn't run far. Skinned across the lake for good views. Mixed feelings about the sticky snow on the divide kept us from going any bigger. Descent to Source Lake skied reasonably well -- enough skiers have groomed the chunder in the main path. Watch for wooden snow-snakes in the luge-track exit; helmets are good for you. No big instability noted -- heard/saw small chunks of snow moving, as well as a chorus of shouts of 'Rock!' somewhere in the vicinity of the Thumbtack.
