Quick report
- Cracking
- isolated
Toured around the chair peak environs through multiple different elevation bands and aspects. Encountered isolated cracking in new snow on the north and west side of chair peak, but despite numerous attempts could not get things to move on even the steepest and most poorly supported test slopes. Hand sheers demonstrated significant variability; at lower elevations I found them breaking on a thin MF crust appx 5cm down, likely from warming temps late in the day 2/19, and above 4500ft they were fracturing in the upper 30cm of snowpack on wind deposited interfaces at variable depths or on top of a 3cm thick MF crust remaining from the warmup early this week, likely on NSF. We intentionally dropped a camry sized chunk of cornice on N facing aspect above chair peak lake, which resulted in localized cracking appx 5m out from either side of the impact zone, but otherwise it just entrained snow deposited over the prior 48h. Lots of loose wet activity from earlier in the week on the south/west side of Chair peak and noticed one older crown line on the north side of Kaleetan, also likely from early in the week.
