In the morning, snow was powdery and light, but solar effect through the clouds transformed it into mashed potatoes by the afternoon in all but higher tree-sheltered slopes. Our group observed widespread rollerball activity in the Melakwa lake drainage. We observed two weak layers during hand shears: one a few inches below the surface and another perhaps a foot down. Snow appeared quite stable in practice as it seemed to lack cohesion, until the top of Bryant, where we triggered the slab.
Avalanche
Near the entrance to Bryant Couloir, we triggered a D1 slab avalanche in the overnight layer of snow. The crown was approximately 6 inches deep and 150 feet wide. The avalanche broke to the front of and below a skier that was traversing right towards the typical uptrack (to use that as an exit).
