Quick report
Spent 5 days out of town and wanted to get some baseline data on stability on some of the steeper terrain out Titus Ridge. Seeing as there has been about 2 weeks since any significant snowfall, my gut tells me that stability has improved significantly. I dug a snowpit on the entrance of Timber Bowl N @ 9380': HS 105cm, 12/13 was dn 60cm and presented as a crust facet layer with surface hoar mixed in, it was 4f hard and the slab above was P hard. Test Results: CT25 SC dn 60cm ECTX (after 31 and 35 hits the column propagated, I know the tests ends at 30, but the structure lead me to believe that propagation was likely with hard force so I kept trying and it produced results). I dug another snowpit just below the forecasters rib(?) dropping down to Titus Lake E @ 9680': HS 125cm, 12/13 was dn 75cm and was a crust facet combo with no surface hoar observed, it was 4f hard and the slab above was 1f hard. Test Results: CTN (after 5 extra hits the column produced a SC results dn 75cm DTN (on 31 the column produced a SC result on 12/13) PST 25/100 END These results have left me feeling a bit unsettled. My gut tells me that the likelihood of triggering a persistent slab avalanche is really unlikely, but after looking at the structure of the snowpack and producing unstable results (acknowledging that all of my results except one CT and PST were not "standard"), I cant figure out how to justify skiing in consequential avalanche terrain off Titus Ridge. Guess I'll just head back to Baker..
