We had widespread cracking in soft slab in the new snow, 6" deep on north facing terrain, and getting deeper as the day went on. New snow varied from light to nuking and high wind. North facing pit at 7800', 20' below ridgeline in sparse timber. TD 200 cm. Pit a bit over 90 cm deep. Did not find any old facets to this depth. ECTN12 15 cm down (cracking layer interface of new/old snow. No crust here) ECTN 29 60 cm (old light crust) The 60 cm layer and column held together reasonably when pried after ECT test. We saw recent bear tracks crossing ridgetops and upper grant creek basin. Could not tell if it was large black bear or smaller griz.
Avalanche
200' wide crown appeared to happen during the day today unless it was older and we were unable to see it on our first couple laps in the storm. Looked like a soft slab that occurred in new snow building up from spindrift at the base of a wide cliff band. We did not inspect closely but looked to be at least 12 inches deep.
