Quick report
Took a tour up to Little Sweeney after this weekend's storm. Air temp. was around 27F at mid and upper elevations. Light winds at mid elevation and moderate winds at upper elevation coming from W/SW. Roughly 6-8" of new snow with snow depth varying due to wind transport. Obvious signs of wind loading on ridge line and exposed terrain; new cornice development along ridge line. Stomped on some cornices around 8,000ft and observed some isolated cracking; one stomp resulted in a 50ft crown 1.5-2ft deep at the center of the crown. Snow slid on a rock slab, went roughly half the path, but did not entrain much of the surrounding snow. Our goal today was to assess new snow and coverage. Main hazard today was thin coverage; lots of rocks, downed trees, and stumps still in play. With new snow and recent wind activity, we were also considering how that would react on top of old snow preserved on N/NE/E faces.
