Quick report

We saw remnants of four small wind slab avalanches that occurred four days ago during the last storm. We suspect one was the remote-triggered avalanche previously reported, and the others were likely naturals.

We dug a pit on a south aspect in above freezing temperatures, and found multiple buried crusts with thin layers of facets in between. We then popped over to a north aspect and got a propagating test result under the wind slab layer. This gave us pause when considering steep northerly aspects, even though we haven't seen recent human-triggered avalanches.

The variety of snow surfaces (wind slab, crusts, moist snow, surface hoar) will provide variable bed surfaces for the next snowfall event.

The inversion kept high elevation temperatures above freezing. Winds were light from the south with moderate gusts at ridgetop. Skies were mostly clear, with valley bottom clouds visible.

Snowpack

The snow surface was a mixture of hard wind slab, softer decomposing snow, moist snow, and crusts. In sheltered areas we even found rounded surface hoar.

We had a propagating extended column test down 15 inches, (ECTP16) under the surface wind slab on a north aspect at 7800 feet.

We dug a full profile on a south aspect where the snowpack was 40 inches deep. This is much shallower than most of the places we've dug recently. We found a series of crusts buried 11 inches deep. There were weak facets between the crusts, and the crusts themselves were starting to facet out. We did not get a result on an extended column test (ECTX), but we did get a planar failure on moderate taps in a compression test down 11 inches immediately under the uppermost crust (CT17 (RP)).

We saw four older wind slab avalanches, which likely all occurred at least four days ago during the last storm. All were size one and naturally triggered except for one, which was reported as remotely triggered by a group skinning up the road. All four were on previously wind loaded east and northeast aspects.
