Went for a ski in a Star Wars themed zone near Kaslo today. The snow was better than expected with 10-15 cm of dry snow on northerly aspects. A mix of sun and cloud, moderate west winds, and slightly cooler temps were keeping solar aspects dry until late afternoon.
We were looking for reactive layers of surface hoar and oh boy did we find one. We didn’t observe any whumphing, cracking, or recent avalanches. However, in our profile at 2200 m on a west aspect (see photo), we got a ECTP 26 down 65 cm on 10-20 mm SH.
We avoided large slopes but found some great riding in lower angle terrain.
