New wet snow was sitting on a saturated snow pack. We did two tests, both with similar findings. First pit was dug at 7400' elevation on a north facing aspect. 10cm on new snow sitting on 140cm of saturated snow pack. Compression test had a Q1 shear at new snow layer. Second pit at 8100' on NW aspect. Snow depth was 200cm with 20cm of new snow on top of saturated layer. Did an ECT and first failure was at 24 and it had propagated across the column.

We seen a recent avalanche way off in the distance on the west side of hwy 21 while we were skinning on the east side of the hwy.
