One very windy day exploring McCrae, definitely recommend a decent clearance vehicle to reach the car park.
We toured up above the lake to where the wind became pretty unbearable. A swirly Southerly gusting 40-60km. In the higher open trees there was a wind scoured crust about 1.5cms thick. There is another crust about 5-10cm down which is about the same thickness but is consistent at most elevations. This sits on top of anywhere between 20 and 50cms of base depending on the elevation. Snow condition is variable in the lower elevation trees.
