Avalanche Canyon

Toured up to 10,200’ and traveled on all aspects of the compass. This morning, we found 6-8” of low density snow sitting on top of a crust in sheltered terrain up to 10k. The snow surface was quickly wetting on solar aspects by about 10am. We started to observe natural wet loose activity coming off steep/rocky south facing terrain in Avalanche Canyon around 11:30 am becoming more frequent around 12:30 pm. One of these slides entrained a good bit of snow and could have been pushing D2 in size. We also observed several small (D1) dry loose sluffs in the north facing terrain of Avalanche Canyon. These appeared to have run sometime within the last day or two. 

We did not observe any wind slabs where we traveled, but I noted some plumes coming off the higher peaks this morning. We talked to several folks who triggered small wind slabs in the south fork of Garnet Canyon around 11,000’ this morning.

We observed several natural wet loose avalanches initiate in rocky, south facing terrain around noon.
