Quick Observation

This was not a surprise due to the recent SPAW, but we found a reactive surface hoar / sun crust layer while skiing low-moderate angle South to West facing slopes in Canyon Creek in previously un-skied terrain. The layer was down 30-40cm and was reactive from 1400m to 2200m producing widespread settlements (whumps) and shooting cracks up to 15m. The snow did not have enough cohesion or the terrain was not steep enough to avalanche in this location. We avoided steep, convex and wind loaded terrain... which there is a lot of around the Kicking Horse backcountry.
