Went looking for surface hoar and found a well preserved layer of large feathery crystals buried 30cm on a northwest aspect at 1820 m. Found the same layer lower down at around 1300 m. This weak layer sheared off easily in snowpack tests, but we did not observe any whumpfs or shooting cracks. Sled testing small safe slopes yielded no results. We didn’t observe any avalanches. We felt good hitting rolls on small slopes, but stayed away from threatening alpine terrain.
