Snowpack

Surface hoar was growing, but light winds has kept it out of the alpine. Depression in the terrain for our pit made the HS deeper than the 140-190cm found at 2370m in the alpine. This test was done in the southern Purcell region, in a sheltered bowl. Temps remained below -5c but we stayed away from the sun and its effects. Concerns this weekend were triggerings of the DPWL composed of a faceted lower snowpack (80cm to ground), saying away from wind slabs in the alpine and cornices. Solar heating above the valley fog caused numerous avalanches ranging from sz1- 2.5 loose and slabs (down 30 probably) on southerly aspect in the alpine. Nothing was observed to have stepped down to basal instabilities probably due to the frequency of avalanches in these paths. CTM 14,16 (RP) down 30 on / ? CTH 23, 26 (RP) down 75 on ? Faceted below 80cm. Stayed conservative and had good skiing this weekend.
