Quick Observation

Great day with unexpectedly good visibility on the Lily Glacier, practicing crevasse rescue skills. No evidence of avalanche instability or activity at TL and BTL. Things got a little spicy in the ALP with winds ranging from light to moderate (gusting to strong) from the S-SW. Ridge top winds were moderate-strong. Our group ski-cut a few SZ1 wind slabs (10-15cm x 30m, ran for 5 m) on the immediate lee of a NE-facing slope. Generally speaking, the cross-loaded W face of Afton/Rampart was stable with no evidence of wind slabs on the up. On the down, however, we triggered two isolated pockets of F+ (soft) wind slabs (Sz 1) higher up on the slope (35deg incline), 10-15cm deep x 20m wide. Ran for 30m. Both remote triggered about 5m away. Overall, tricky pathfinding through a wind slab minefield but still good snow. With winds maintaining their strengths and additional snow loading, I can only imagine things will get worse in the ALP.
