Lunch at the 112

acooper, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:32PM

Took a chance by going up Begbie Shoulder today. It was warmer than expected when we got up and the first few hundred metres up the skin track were pretty discouraging. Fortunately, by 1300m the snow had lightened up considerably and stayed that way. Skiing was fantastic above 1600m and still pretty good down to 1300m. From there, the snow got heavier and heavier and getting back to the cars was a real slog. We saw a few small loose dry slides come down a steep open slope near the top of the shoulder. There was lots of sluffing but no signs of reactivity in the slab. Lower down we easily set off some loose wet and wet slab avalanches. Got some pretty big pinwheels rolling but nothing consequential. It was 2C at 900m when we got back to the cars.
