We ran a great AST 2 last week, despite the challenging conditions, but we were pleasantly surprised with the skiing for what had happened. Last weekends rain and melt event was found up to @ 1800m, with much wind affect noted above in the Alpine. We found on average 175-200cm of settled snowpack around various treeline aspects, and in snowpack tests we had no significant results with compression, extended column or propagation saw tests. The snowpack is strong and well settled as a result of the generally above average snowfall thru december, and the overall warm winter.
Early in the week, we noted a widespread avalanche cycle of windslabs in the Alpine, up to size 2.5-3, in pretty much all steep East aspects in the HBM backcountry areas.
This is of course old news now.
The current inversion and resulting conditions on the surface will be the thing to watch moving forward, when it decides to snow again. Enjoy the nice weather.
