Quick Observation
Stayed at the Asulkan hut from 8-11th Jan. Was windy for the whole 72 hours we were at the hut. We saw fairly a recent avalanche crown and debris on the steeper portion of the east ski descent of sapphire col, came to the conclusion that it likely failed due to recent wind loading. Skied a lot of tree triangle throughout the weekend with a lot of deep powder - Skiers right of the gully outside the hut, no signs of instability while skiing all weekend until another group triggered a windslab at the top of the gully right in front of the hut. All around the hut was wind scoured with pockets of wind loaded snow over convex rolls due to strong wind all weekend. Skied triangle moraine Friday 9th- found unbelievable conditions with very deep and stable snow. attempted to head up sapphire col on Saturday 10th but pulled the pin due to excessive wind. Skied triangle moraine again and found better snow the further skiers left (more sheltered from the wind) with near the ridge of the moraine having stiffer snow. Also went up ravens about 1/2 way and found very good skiing conditions with great skiing the further skiers right and lower in the valley away from the wind.
