We rode up through Providence Canyon and checked out the New Years Avalanche in Richard's Hollow on the east side of Red Pine Ridge.
The southern part of the crown was at least 6 feet tall, but much of the slab in the broad avalanche was much thinner. The faceted snow the the avalanche failed on in the middle part of the bowl was very weak and sugary. The avalanche ran down and crossed the summer road below. This was a large avalanche but it did not make it to the maximum runout distance.
