Quick report

Dug a shallow pit on a wind loaded slope, 9700’ E aspect near Island Lake in the Beartooths. ECTN 19 on new-old snow interface, about 12” deep. Shovel sheer could not produce a clean slab to pop off. Snow structure in the upper 3 feet of the snowpack seems right side up, with soft fresh snow resting over hard lower layers. The interface of new-old snow was the most concerning layer. Light to moderate (S1) snow and moderate winds are starting to stiffen the new snow. Small test slopes provided some minor slab release in the fresh snow. No large avalanches observed.
