The flip flop conditions in the parking lot and all the avalanche activity suggest this is a bit of a proto-spring? Timing matters more than usual. Our tour up Rescue, over Penrose, and out Skiumah featured plenty of avalanche activity. Solar aspects in Rescue were generally crusty at lower elevations, with varying degrees of wind affected/slabby snow in polar aspects as we ascended to the Nyack/Penrose col. Lots of wet loose debris that seemed gouging fairly deep into deeper, dryer layers for how far it had traveled. Upper areas on the descent to Skiumah saw light wind loading in the bottom of the chute, with firmer wind surfaces to both sides. Lower down, we skied consistent soft slab debris for over 1500ft. Multiple large slides (D2-D3) have run in the amphitheater above the lake. Skies were clear. Moderate winds on the summit, but light to none elsewhere. Temps cold in the valleys and summit but above freezing below 5k ft on our descent.
