Quick report
Hiked into The Three Sisters wilderness to camp and ride. I observed a Large D3 Wet Slab avalanche lookers left side of Thayer Headwall on a NE facing slope at 8600’ ft. Crown height appears to be 3-6ft deep. Could have released on a deeper persistent weak layer. I noticed several other shallower crowns and their debris on the Villard and more due East on the Thayer HW. These appeared to be 1-2ft deep and released on a shallower layer. I also saw a few cornice collapses. Although still warm and wet it did seem like water was draining from the upper snowpack. Between 7-8k ski penetration was 2-4in and boot penetration was generally 3-6in. I camped out last night 1/28 and as I write this on the morning of the 29th it has been above freezing all night at 6600’ with a warm wind. Snowpack surface is still wet and unfrozen at this elevation. I did observe what looks like a fresh snow line above 8600’.
