Quick report
I snowmobiled and ski toured at Paulina Peak today. It was snowing lightly all day, with light winds out of the SW that were also shifting around from different directions. I did not observe any blowing snow. I toured to the top of the north-facing bowls to check out the snow surface and look for our wind slab avalanche problem. I found shallow wind slabs on lee slopes, but no shooting cracks or evidence of recent avalanches (visibility was quite limited, but I could see into the upper bowl). I also observed shallow storm slabs while touring in the trees, but these were stubborn and quite small (6-8 inches deep). In the morning, the snow surface was light and fluffy and great ski quality. I took an air temp measurement around noon, and it was -4.5 C (24 F). Around 1:30 PM, a thin layer of rime formed on the snow surface. At this time, the snow started feeling a bit heavier, and this is when I noticed more of a slab on the surface as well. I did not observe any red flag signs of snowpack instability.
