Quick Observation

Great skiing near Nadahini Glacier. Sunny with minimal wind. No recent avalanche activity on S and E aspects, but several cornice breaks and size 1’s on N and W aspects. We skied the SW portion of the glacier, and a ridge just west of the glacier. We dug a pit on a SE facing aspect of the ridge at 1600 m (~25 degree slope). Snow depth was 90 cm with 3 rain crusts: 1) down 20 cm from surface, 2) down 35cm, and 3) a very thick crust down 55 cm, with hollow facets underneath. There was also a thick layer of ice at the bottom of the snowpack. Extended column test resulted in non-planar breaks at 15 (on first crust) and 23 (on second crust). No results on third crust until we pried out the column. Surface hoar is developing in areas protected from wind. Ski quality was good!
