East Side of Mt Washington

Our AIARE Level 2 course spent two days on the East side of Mt Washington. We were interested in how well the new snow was bonding to the old snow surface as well as observe the structure of the new snow. We noticed the new snow was upside down with denser snow near the surface. We observed repeated failures within the new snow approx 30cm from the surface. The new snow is now capped with a 3cm knife hard breakable crust below approx 3800’ Extreme winds and blowing snow kept us at and below treeline. Areas that got skied heavily on 3/10 . Ski conditions were very challenging on 3/11.
