Cracking

Collapsing
isolated

We observed some cracking on the steepest pitches in the storm snow. Cracking was limited to the upper 1' and occurred in unsupported skin track switchbacks and to a lesser extent while skiing down. These instabilities were enough to keep us off of steep rollovers (over 30ish degrees). I heard one collapse in a wind loading area around 8,000'. Wind slabs were building on ridgelines as low as 7500'. We found a 2cm MFC "zipper" crust in the upper 8cm on southerlies below 8,000'. No angry blue grouse were observed on the tour.
