Cracking

Traveling between 9,500 and 10,500 feet on north-facing terrain, I found the base generally stable but extremely variable in depth depending on location, with the new storm snow measuring 6 to 12 inches and wind-loaded drifts exceeding 24 inches. Surface cracking was limited to shallow, low-density storm-snow fractures in the top few inches that broke easily underfoot but showed no slab characteristics and were loosely on top of the firmer base.
