Snowpack

We went to the Donner Peak area today to look at changes on the Dec 12 weak layer and the surface rain crust.  The rain last Tuesday was more than expected and at higher elevations.  A firm, but thin, rain crust exists on all aspects up to at least 8000' in the Donner Summit area.  This surface crust ranges from very supportable firm to breakable throughout this terrain.  We did not find any weakness developing below this rain crust in this area.  Snowpack tests and observations showed an overall uniform and strong snowpack with the Dec 12 layer having gained strength.  This Donner Summit snowpack is getting deeper, over 5 feet deep, and in good shape to handle additional storm load.
