Quick report
I dug a snow pit in N facing terrain at 8000ft, which still has soft surface snow, to investigate the stability of layers within the top 100cm in advance of the upcoming storms. Last week's two storm layers, still soft, were visually apparent in the top 30cm. Then, a 10cm layer of 4F facets(?) laid atop a thin pencil-hard crust (138cm). Below that, about 40cm of 4F-1F rounds over a thick layer of moist, rounding, fist-hard facets. The crust at 138cm seemed local to one side of the pit and didn't factor into any test results. Compression tests and shovel tilts identified the new snow layers in the top 30cm. Extended column tests did not show propagation.
