Quick report
Got two laps in the northeast facing gullies off Fireplug between 8200’ and 9200’. Found similar conditions to what most others have found, with a shallow snowpack, plenty of obstacles, and a variety of surfaces. On the north half of the compass, I found soft, faceted surface snow atop a crust in sheltered areas. In more exposed areas, this was capped by firm wind board, which was fully supportable to skis in some locations and breakable in others. In one section that felt particularly hollow, I jumped on it, and broke off a roughly 10’ x 10’ slab, which slid downhill for twenty feet before fracturing into much smaller plates. It was only about 2-3” thick. Overall, the turns were iffy today, and coverage left something to be desired. The most excitement for me came when I found a trail of large bear prints that headed right into the hollow of a huge tree. I kick turned and got out of there real quick.
