Sunny skies over Castle Peak in the mid to late morning hours today with mild temperatures. Thin high clouds could be seen far to the west and thicker clouds banked up against the Carson Range to the East of Lake Tahoe. Dense fog was present in the town of Truckee throughout most of the day. Winds were light in the morning with evidence of previous wind scouring from recent East winds.
Snowpack
I went to Castle Peak this morning to look at the snowpack along the Sierra Crest. Over the snow travel on skis in this area/elevation is poor at best with a very shallow snowpack and lots of mud and obstacles present. At my highpoint of 8200', I dug a snowpit to look at the recent 6-8'' of storm snow. Recent winds have created a wind crust on the surface in more exposed areas with this recent storm snow falling on bare ground. No older previous snow from the October/early November storms was found at this elevation. Surface hoar was found up to my high point of 8200' and was up to 5mm in size. There is a chance that this surface hoar could be buried on Northerly aspects with our next storm that arrives tonight and will have to be monitored.
