Observations: Elevation 2400-3500 2-3" Elevation 3500 & up 2' variable some N aspects only held a few inches. Micro-climates up there are wild. Snow @ 5,000' on S aspects more stable, crust 2-4" below the surface. I did not break through (160lb + 25lb gear) - so fairly strong. Snow pit notes: Elevation 4700 feet WNW aspect snow depth is 110 cm above snow from Dec/early Jan. Some evidence of wind loading. Layer 1: 0 - 60 cm, very stable well bonded. Layer 2: 60-77 cm depth hoar Layer 3: 77-110 cm failure between wrist/elbow tap, propagating. Layer above depth hoar is VERY unstable. Lots of snow-pack collapsing, cracking, wumping, propagating.
