Quick report
A warm day in the mountains. Surfaces on all aspects below 7,500' were melting within the top few centimeters. All surface hoar was breaking down under the heat of the day, even in sheltered and shaded locations. Between 7,500 and 8,000' it was possible to find near surface facets, but above that the surfaces were too wind affected to find. I performed a test pit and profile at 8,300 feet on a north aspect. No results with a CT or ECT (CTN, ECTX). The profile revealed a snowpack of mostly rounding grains with some rounding facets around the 1/3 layer down 50 cm, the 12/28 down 70cm, and the 12/18 down 110cm. Below this was a series of laminate ice layers atop 15 cm of large rounding facets.
