Quick report

This was primarily an off duty riding and ski day to enjoy the sunshine and new snow, as well as take advantage of the notable visibility to observe avalanches after multiple cycles during the past series of storms. While there were multiple large to very large avalanches that ran in this storm, there was generally less activity  & activity running shallower in the snowpack than one might imagine with the amount of water we received. It seems like we are trending towards moderate danger at least in the Sawtooths.

We experienced no immediate cracking or collapsing in terrain we traveled. See avalanche section for more information about slides observed.

Blue skies, crisp single digit F temps, and calm winds made for a lovely start to the day near 10:00. Temperatures rose into the estimated mid teens F, and we experienced light to moderate winds above 9400'.

Snowpack

This was primarily an off duty day spent mostly moving through terrain without stopping to do too many formal obs (pits, etc) other than glassing for recent avalanche activity.

With clear skies and cool temperatures, we have switched from slab-building weather (storms) back to weak layer-building weather. While the wind took care of much of the new weaknesses on surfaces in exposed terrain at the upper end of middle elevations that we traveled up to ridgeline today, I would expect there to be a weak interface in many locations, especially in sheltered and lower elevation terrain, if weather plays out as forecasted heading into what is slated to be Monday's storm. With less wind, these weak surfaces can build in more exposed terrain as well.

Saw multiple large to very large persistent slab avalanche that ran during our series of storms in recent weeks. There was a dry loose cycle but it was not as widespread / large in areas we observed as one might expect based on recent snow totals and solar input.
