Quick report

This was an attempt to do a day of sled-accessed skiing in the Alturas Lake Creek drainage that was foiled by sled issues.

No obvious signs of instability, but travel was limited.

Weather

Thick clouds hanging on Galena Pass and to the south, with partly cloudy to clear skies to the north. Cloud cover gradually thickened on the north side of the pass throughout the day, with skies becoming mostly cloudy in the afternoon.

Snowpack

Just a few cms of snow above the major crust at the highway, increasing to 10-12cm by Alturas Lake. All of this snow became moist and then wet as the day warmed. Off-trail, the crust was boot supportable everywhere we encountered it.

Avalanche

This was the first time in the past few days that I've had direct eyes on the Sawtooth front with good light. It appears that there was a fairly widespread wet loose shedding event that likely occurred on Friday, 3/29, based on observed weather and submitted observations. I observed obvious wet loose debris in the locations you'd expect to see i.
