Quick report

Rainier Nordic Patrol had two teams in the backcountry today. Neither observed any avalanches. Numerous members of the public were out and about and we didn't see anyone set off anything. We performed a few hand pits at 5600 on a SW slope. They failed with clean, planar breaks on the crust about 6 inches down with low to moderate force. Also jumped on a small test slope nearby and we were able to get the slab to slide. There seemed to be a fair bit of variance between aspects. Those exposed to wind (e.g. Pan Face) did not have much snow left above the crust to slide. The weather was stormier than expected. The sun did attempt to make an appearance, but largely was stick behind the clouds. It snowed on and off all day, and was snowing moderately as we left the field around 3. Minimal wind today, but plenty of evidence from winds last night.
