Overall, conditions appear to be stabilizing after last weekend's storm. However, there are still some lingering issues to keep in mind. The persistent slab problem is low likelihood, high consequence. While digging, I still found poor snowpack structure with buried crust facet combos, but we haven't seen any recent avalanches on these layers. The wind slab problem has become much less sensitive. There are still lots of signs of wind affected snow surfaces at upper elevations, but I only found some isolated, stubborn cracking in a wind drift. On sunny slopes, the snow surface was getting wet today, and I suspect that wet loose avalanches were possible on steep sunny slopes.

It was a gorgeous day in the mountains with mostly sunny skies, light west winds, and warm temperatures.
Snowpack
I dug two snowpits today, one on a north aspect at 6800 ft and the other on a northeast aspect at 7650 ft. Both pits had similar structures, but the upper elevation pit was significantly deeper with much more old snow. They both had the crust facet combo that we've been tracking since earlier in December. They also both had a newer crust facet combo buried 6-12" deep. That layer produced non-propagating results on facets just below the crust in extended column tests (ECTN12 & ECTN16).
