Today we went on a scenic sled tour out to Summer Lake to check out the effect of the warming event on the snowpack in the Bull area, and keep hunting for surface hoar buried beneath the newer snow.
At 1600 m on the lake, we found a 5 cm breakable crust on the surface and the snowpack depth was 70 cm - 100 cm. Despite the solar output today, the surface never softened.
It was a beautiful, calm, bluebird day, but still stayed cold with the afternoon high being -11 in the shade. With the clear skies and lack of overnight wind, we noticed a bit of surface hoar growth in open areas.
On sunny slopes we noticed old loose wet debris at all elevations. However with today’s temps, everything had refrozen and will probably stay that way for awhile
A radio is a must if you are traveling in that direction as there is active logging on the Bull.
