Mear, Mear, on the wall, looks like there's dry snow after all.
Today at Mear Lake, we found dry snow and good sledding. At Treeline and Below Treeline, widespread surface hoar is currently growing on all aspects. Below Treeline there is a 1 cm breakable crust. In the Treeline and Alpine, the snow surface is dry, and the crust either does not exist or is so thin that it is not noticeable to machine or foot penetration. Down 40 cm at Treeline is a preserved layer of surface hoar from January 2nd that is reactive to snowpack tests. In alpine terrain, we observed moderate wind transport at the ridge top.
We did not observe any new avalanches throughout the day. There were numerous recent natural avalanches, ranging from 12 to 72 hours old.
The skies were sunny, and the temperature was below freezing all day. The winds were Light from the NW at Treeline, and Strong from the NW in the Alpine.
