Quick report

Observed buried service hoar 40cms down in a snow pit on a southwest aspect at 3800’ on Girls Mtn. Total snowpack depth was 215cms(6.5’). The mid December warm up/rain crust was about 80cms down (2.5’); and the end of November windstorm layer was about 100cms down (3’). It was challenging to tell where the surface hoar was at first but after I found it, it was obvious. It had a very abrupt, clean sheer on a compression test, I preformed 3 times and it was failing in the mid teens. I didn’t have a long cord so I could not preform an extended column test, but if I were to guess it would have propagated across some, if not all of the block. Other than being slightly scared on steeper slopes, the conditions consisted of the most excellent powder riding.
