Stomping around with Dylan's "Desolation Row" playing in my mind yesterday added another layer of surrealism.

As a young patroller in the mid 80's I would remember Bruce Tremper saying, "If you wanna learn about avalanches... go look at avalanches." And yesterday that resonated with me. Yup.... crawling around avalanches helps you understand how they work. My travels took me to mid LCC where I wanted to revisit the February avy cycle and ensuing carnage as it melts out. It's amazing to see huge swaths of trees obliterated with some trees ripped out with root balls still intact. Similar to the January 2005 cycle on the other side of the road. With so little canyon traffic it's worth the trip.

Empty parking lots and empty slopes.... pretty eerie feeling in the canyon right now.

Snowpack

Stunning day in LCC with a phat, deep pack.... it's remarkably white right now. Monday's cool, clear night keeping a small wedge of high north facing terrain cold and chalky, with smooth snow surfaces on sunny aspects becoming soft by 11:00.
