No significant signs of instability were observed during the ascent. At lower elevations (~500’), there was only a trace of new snow. Around 1000’, the snowpack consisted of approximately 1–2 inches of snow over a supportable crust. At 2000’, snow depth increased to roughly 4–5 inches of wet snow over a supportable base. Weather conditions were low visibility with temperatures in the mid-20s°F. Winds were calm, and light precipitation persisted throughout the day (S1 to S2 intensity). Our objective was to avoid steep avalanche terrain and seek colder, northerly aspects. We found soft snow in these areas. The main gully approach appeared reasonable for ascent, with minimal overhead hazard due to a lack of hangfire and evidence that the main face had previously avalanched into the gully (timing unknown). A snowpit was dug on a northwest-facing, sheltered slope at 2500’ on a ~25° slope. Total snow depth (HS) was 200 cm. The 3/19 persistent weak layer (PWL) was easily identified. Stability tests produced an ECTP23 at 50 cm, failing on facets associated with the 3/19 PWL. This result is concerning, though not unexpected given the known structure. My overall impression of stability- the snowpack structure south of Bird Ridge toward Girdwood appears poor within the upper meter, with a persistent weak layer still active and capable of propagation. While recent reports suggest less propagation in the Turnagain Pass zone, this observation indicates continued concern in this area. With current air temperatures, snow temperatures, and forecasted precipitation, this structure remains suspect and could become more reactive with additional loading.
