Red Flags
Recent Avalanches, Collapsing, Rapid Warming, Poor Snowpack Structure

Out for a tour in Cardiff Fork. Our group experiencing a large amount of collapsing and whoomphing on our skin up once past Montreal Hill. We dug some quick hand pits that showed a 5-6 inch storm slab we a poorly bonded weak layer underneath made up of large, wet snow crystals. I'm not a snow expert, so I don't know how to scientifically categorize the layer or snow crystals. We kept our ski out low angle and did not trigger any avalanche activity. Our ski out was very warm with obvious signs of rapid warming with roller balls and glopping. Signs of recent wet loose at higher elevations originating primarily from cliff/rock areas.
